Abstract:
With an ever increasing number of complementing and
competing wireless standards to be launched worldwide,
consumer connectivity becomes a question of having all
of the protocols available while being able to actively
run just a subset of them at any given point in time.
The complexity of such multi-protocol products clearly
challenges the business strategy of the semiconductor
industry to provide complete solutions with short time-to-market
and leaves OEM’s with ever shrinking margins.
The author proposes a different value-chain approach
where the semiconductor supplier provides an open platform
for system integration. A highly efficient C-compiler
allows OEM’s to integrate their own and 3rd party
IP in minimum time and thus provide customized solutions
to an increasingly segmented consumer market. Both RF
and baseband design considerations are discussed in
the light of 90nm and beyond technologies.
Biography:
Guenter Weinberger joined Sandbridge Technologies,
Inc., in 2002 as President & CEO. The NY based start-up
company provides leading baseband technology for multimode
wireless solutions to major handset manufacturers.
Previously, Guenter held a number of positions with
Siemens Semiconductor Group and then Infineon Technologies,
where he built the wireless business since 1995. From
1997 to 1999 he was the VP and GM for RF products, and
from 1999 to 2001 he was the SVP and GM for the entire
wireless business. During this period he built the system
solution business as well as strategic alliances in
the wireless industry.
Guenter started his career in mixed-signal telecom IC
design after graduating as Diplom Ingenieur of electrical
engineering from University of Kaiserslautern, Germany.
